LEARNS // My Favorite Podcasts

I know. I know. Podcasts are nothing new…especially the ones I’ve listed below. However, they are new to me. Up until about a year ago I had never listened to a podcast in. my. life. But I found myself commuting quite a bit every day and always in the car…I felt very unproductive. Rather than sing and dance along to my favorite songs…what can I do to maximize my day? First, I got hooked on the ultra-popular Serial podcast. It was perfect thought-provoking entertainment for my ride to and from work. Plus, it was just so easy to play from my phone through my bluetooth in my car. So…my search was on to find something similar once Season 1 was over. I have found some really good podcasts and some that bore me…but I wanted to share the 5 I listen to on a regular basis. 5 that I look forward to new updates every week!

lively show

The Lively Show – Jess Lively is my new best friend. You know how some people carpool to and from work every day? Well I carpool with Jess and a super interesting guest of hers every week! I get to work super motivated and/or inspired. There has yet to be an episode that I haven’t finished by saying out loud “Wow.” And believe me when I say that…because I’ve gone back through archives and listened to every. single. one. This show is for all women entrepreneurs. Whether you are single, married, with kids, career transitioning, small-business owner – you will find something that inspires you (and add a little extra intention to your everyday – her great words, not mine!)

TED Radio Hour – Ah I really enjoy finding a new TEDtalk. But this podcast doesn’t deliver an entire talk…instead it goes “behind-the-scenes” in a sense and interviews TEDtalk speakers and gives snippets of their talks. I’ve become hooked to this format, because if I find an interview interesting…once I get to work, I search for the full talk! Most speaker stories’ are incredible and worth diving into.

song exploder

Song Exploder – I love music and I love finding new artists. This podcast takes one song and interviews its artist. Listeners find out the story behind the lyrics. Most of the time, it is artist I have not heard of making it even MORE interesting. And then there are artists I have – and it makes me an even bigger fan. This podcast is also on the shorter side…so its a great quick pleasure.

marriage is funny

Marriage is Funny – I found this podcast through The Lively show. The wife of the MIF team, Jesse Artigue, was a guest on The Lively Show. Her and her husband, Gerard, discuss every day topics that most couples grapple with or are amazed by. Usually I don’t listen to a lot of “couple” centered podcasts/blogs/tvshows because its hard to relate since my relationship is SO different. But I found Jessie and Gerard to be refreshing and I usually get some good laughs.

Serial – I mentioned this one above. If you aren’t a podcast listener – you still have probably heard about the Serial craze. Serial tells one true story throughout an entire season. Season one focused on Adnan Syed and his conviction in the murder of Hae Min lee. The host, Sarah Koenig, goes back through case files, interviews and any holes in the story looking for answers. Sarah does a great job of not swaying you one way or another…but allowing you the facts to base your own opinion. SO good.

I had the opportunity this week to attend the Mesa Latin Kitchen Preview Dinner. This is a new restaurant in Durham, NC. Owner Fares Hanna revamped old restaurant space after recognizing the need for a modern, urban tapas-style Latin eatery in Durham.

Mesa Latin Kitchen is a modern, tapas-style restaurant offering a unique array of sensational Latin cuisine in a lively, dynamic environment. Each of Mesa’s mouthwatering dishes are full of explosive Latin flavor and infused with authentic Cuban zest, with each recipe masterfully created by renowned James Beard Award winner, Chef Douglas Rodriguez. Chef Douglas also appeared on Bravo’s popular TV show Top Chef.

The dishes blew me away. So much flavor in each bite and the presentation was so beautiful. The restaurant is cozy, yet chic. The various colors round out a unique decor style that complements the complex, yet stunning food displays. If I could recommend a handful of items for your visit they would be:

  • The Colombian Empanadas
  • Smoked Bacon Wrapped Dates
  • Chared Sweet Corn
  • Grilled Asparagus
  • Seared Carolina Trout

And for dessert…

You HAVE to try the guava cake that was wrapped in a pastry. I don’t know if I’ve ever tasted something so delicious!

For the locals – you can try Mesa Latin Kitchen for yourself during their Grand Opening Weekend July 17-19th!
